History The history of Arkhangelsk ties with the Dutch sailing history. The city was founded in 1584 and became the first Russian port playing a major role in the trade with Europe. From the 1560s, Dutch merchants began to start sailing their ships to the White Sea. By the 17th century it was mainly the Dutch who send their trading ships to the northwestern part of Russia. In 1722, Peter the Great decreed that Arkhangelsk should no longer accept goods that amounted more than was sufficient for the town and all international marine trade was shift to St. Petersburg.
